Local ~ The primary FarmGarden and teaching site is located in the small town of Grass Valley, California. Situated at roughly 2,500 feet (760 m) elevation in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Grass Valley has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa) with warm, dry summers and wet, cool winters. Summer can be very dry, but thunderstorms may occur. The winter rains contribute to a heavy fuel-loading of brush and grass, which dry out during the summer, posing a wildfire hazard. Sometimes we get snow.
The average first frost date is November 11 and the last average frost date is April 21. Grass Valley averages 53 inches of rain a year.
